SKY-HI & BMSG – BMSG Staff Recruitment Video for BizReach

On July 18, 2024 BMSG posted recruitment information on the Japanese job search platform, BizReach. Roles such as CxO, artist manager, A&R, and many more are open. There are a total of 10 BMSG positions available for BizReach members to apply (no registration cost if you want to sign up for an account on BizReach).

Other than a special feature interview with BMSG CEO and producer, SKY-HI, a recruitment video was made to go along with it. I've translated the video below.

Enjoy!

Feel free to follow along as you watch the video!

Testimonials from current BMSG managers:
An environment where my opinions are heard and are seen in action ✊ Besides supporting the artists, offering setlist ideas, ideas for goods, how they can show off in MVs, etc. The artists themselves are open-minded too, it feels like I can voice my opinions openly (regardless of hierarchy) and are welcomed.

Boss says managers saying “this way is better” at work or a live can totally happen / has happened before. He says he has worked the hardest at making sure BMSG is a company where employees feel comfortable to communicate anything and voice their thoughts (this was mentioned in his book Management no Hanashi as well). He believes that if he holds this belief it will flow through everyone. If he believes that, so will his artists. If his artists believe it, so will their manager(s). Good vibes get passed around! ✨

Boss: Isn’t this a good model answer? Let’s end the video here?

Even if you have zero experience in management - as long as you've got the determination and willingness to learn - challenge yourself! It's worth it ✊

Here boss mentions beef's chief manager, who career switched at 26 and is now 27. He may be the youngest in age but is a key player now. Boss thinks there are two factors that play into this: one, he hadn’t caught the “habits'' of Japanese work culture yet, [BMSG was / is] creating new work culture and manners, so the fact that he “didn’t have any colours” was good. Of course, he still had the skills to complete tasks and communicate, but his feelings and perspective being an empty slate was good. The second is, as an artist manager you are doing a lot of the tasks that a project manager (PM) would. In a normal company that is someone pretty high up in the company hierarchy. You can do that early on as an artist manager. You can grow, learn business etiquette, and get feedback in an environment where there’s no hierarchy.

As the CEO, boss is simply looking at the number of projects the artist has and how much they’re working on said projects. Boss wants to create ⭐star managers ⭐ too. As a company, it’s great that work is constantly coming in for his artists, but he wants people to think “Well, so and so is the manager for this artist…” too, he thinks it’s worth the investment and training to bring up such talented managers as well.

MADE IN JAPAN. I feel like we're truly creating a new culture in Japan 🔥

Boss: A new culture in Japan…I really feel like the world wants that too. It’s great! Isn’t this an awesome reason? I’m all fired up now! 🔥Even though I just finished a live yesterday lol.

I've had work experience, there's none of that "shouganai" culture [at BMSG]. You get the sense that they treasure every staff, there is no sense of pressure working here.

Boss: That's right, I want to get rid of "shouganai". I also want to get rid of that impression that managers are just there to hold the artist’s bags and luggage. Rather than follow the rules of entertainment, I want more common sense of society in BMSG. I want the phrase “Shouldn’t artist managers do this?” to stop. I want managers to be able to do their jobs with ease, have fun, with no absurdities. We have “Creativity FIRST, Quality FIRST, and Artisism FIRST” as our compass, if everyone can do that then there’s infinite chances of “We can do it this way instead”.

As a CEO and producer, the final decision falls on me, but I think an environment where you find it easy to speak up, even if you don’t have decisive power, is better for everyone and all of us. An environment where all the staff is happy with the work they do creates a good vibe doesn’t it? Good vibes is directly linked to performance right? Mm, I think creating good vibes, I think I’m working the hardest on that, currently.

Boss: Is this the last one? So fast! Everyone wrote great things! Wow, thank you so much!

Thanks for the monthly massage as part of the staff benefits

Boss mentions there's also acupuncture besides the massage for staff benefits. Serious talk, he says it's important that not only artists but also managers maintain good physical health because work can get busy and intense. Other than artists needing massages or rest, so do managers. Thinking about a manager’s life – no matter how important they think the artist’s life is (before their own), boss thinks we should treasure the manager’s life too. He wants his managers to be healthy. Although this manager wrote it kind of like a joke, it’s very important, lol. Oh and the other staff benefit is dance lessons lmao.

Does experience matter?
No work experience in music industry
Whether you know a lot about music or not doesn't matter - of course having some knowledge of music and the culture is a plus, but it's not the be all end all. Most important – "love & respect"

With work experience
What he wants to know the most is – why did you leave? What was the frustration or stress that you had that made you consider switching?

What they looking for in a manager
- Someone who is strong-willed, but flexible and adaptable
- Love and respect

Boss: Whether they like it or not, artists get a price tag attached to them. I think it’s very important we have the mindset of respect and love for what we create, what we produce, and who we are at the root of it all, which has nothing to do with a price tag.

Boss: We are also borrowing from a lot of cultures, BE:FIRST especially is very close to hiphop. We are borrowing from cultures other people have created, forming our own art from that, we / they definitely must have that awareness and respect. Saying that, “It’s just a music genre isn’t it?” for hip hop or any other matter related to music is definitely NG [not acceptable].

So I’m looking for people with love and respect; who are strong-willed but flexible.

Final words
We’re in our fifth year as a company and have hit over 50 employees. To achieve and manifest the things we want to do, we need more people on deck. Things we want to do, things we want to but can’t do yet… there are a lot. I can promise you that all of those things are filled with dreams and infinite possibilities. So I truly hope people apply, whether you have the experience or not, why not become one of the people who makes Japan fly to the world?

For those of you that want to know more about BMSG, I have a video, “2024 BMSG CEO PRESENTATION” on the BMSG Youtube channel. I think it comes up even if you just type “BMSG CEO” in the search bar. It’ll be great if you understand more of what we do.

Let’s manifest our dreams together. This has been BMSG’s CEO, SKY-HI. Thank you so much for watching.

Hope you enjoyed!
