s**t kingz on choreographing "Smile Again"

BE:FIRST's "Smile Again" was choreographed by all of s**t kingz, Kazuki uploaded not only a dance cover, behind-the-scenes (of the dance cover), but also invited Oguri, Shoji (s**t kingz), and his good friend Show-hey to watch BE:FIRST's "Smile Again" Dance Performance Video.

As they watched, they all provided insight into how they formed the choreography and which member of s**t kingz choreographed which part!

Video link here.

From Show-hey
“What the fans wanna see right, their sleeping faces” 😂

Ryoki had a difficult move there (going from lying down, lifting his head+upper body, lie down again, to standing up)
Kazuki: But he didn’t say anything and did it
Show-hey: Well, you shoulda said somethin’, Ryoki
Further on in the video, him and Kazuki explain the part in the beginning - because while everyone is sitting, Ryoki is lying down and could only use his core to lift his neck and upper body just a little during Junon’s “Boku ga~ mite ta~”

The s**t kingz technique: While everyone may be in different positions (standing, bending down), everyone stops at the same time

JUNON’s gotten better at using his body compared to 1-2 years ago 👍

From Kazuki

  • Manato’s movement was pretty (during chorus)

  • “LEO~ So pleasant!” (during LEO’s “kaze ni yureta” line)

  • The way SHUNTO walks here is lovely too (during SHUNTO’s “fureta te ga, kureta ondo ga kiete shimau mae ni~”

  • JUNON’s tall and has big hands – has a body that looks good when he dances ✨the con is that there are details that tall people may not be able to do well unless they pay attention to it

General

  • They wanted to start the song with them sleeping

  • Each member slowly wakes up from their dream after Junon’s “yume ga sameta” line

Ryoki’s choreo was freestyle (“nandomo sagashite~ mada owarasenai de~”)
Kazuki: I dunno what he was doing actually, it looks pretty intense [looks at RYOKI’s part again]
Kazuki: He probably does it differently every time?
Show-hey: He did it differently in the practice video
Kazuki: If it’s like that, then he’ll be able to match the movements [of the members] at the back, while singing! Amazing, it’s like he’s got both the emotions and logic!
Oguri: Well, Ryoki’s not afraid to freestyle at all too.
Kazuki: That’s super good for a dancer
Show-hey: He’s had experience in acting and in theatre, so you can tell he’s got a lot of guts
Kazuki: Yes. It’s like he’s a completely different person from “Scream” too

Watching RyuRyu’s “kimi wa kirei da” in the 1st chorus…
Kazuki: But after seeing Shoji’s…
Shoji: *angry* What did I do!?
Oguri: Yours was like *ki rei da*
Shoji: Nooo!
Kazuki: It was like “everyone~ let’s do it together~”
Shoji: It wasn’t like that!
Show-hey: Like NHK-esque
Kazuki: It was still great!
Shoji: Shut up you!

[Back to Ryuhei…]
Kazuki: But Ryuhei – being a teen and surrounded by older members, how does he manage to hold back [from showing off]? It’s a very good part of a song but he’s able to match the vibe and get it just right.
They decided on the SA choreo split by rock, paper, scissors; whoever wins picks the part they want to choreograph (btw Kazuki won → Oguri second)

A lot of the choreo was combined, made to match and flow with the song through trial and error

Rather than a dance that was intense / hardcore, s**t kingz wanted a choreo that told a story with “Smile Again”, so NOPPO struggled with the story-telling aspect for the Soumana part.

The hand movement during “kimi shika mienai” is kinda like when the camera zooms in and focuses on someone / something (Oguri’s idea, he thinks, he’s not sure, lol, then everyone agreed on that as a base and improved on it)

The hand digging? move during “Taiyou ga waratte”: The sun is rising and the moon is setting

  • They were being silly with this part in the beginning lol

  • Their assistants did the silly version found it too embarrassing, so they scrapped it 😂

Show-hey: but that’s what’s dance is about right, playing around with it then developing it into something better
Shoji: Yeah, because if you take it too seriously, the choreography can turn out really boring

The members struggled with the steps and positions after Shunto’s “kimi wa kirei daaaaa” in the final chorus
Dance performance video was taken in one-take

Members are dancing on an island, the cameraman was moving around a lot but also had to make sure they didn’t fall off
Show-hey & Kazuki: Circle shapes are the worst though, isn’t it?
Oguri: It’s definitely a miracle they did this in one-take

Choreo splitttttttttttttttttt
Kazuki made choreo for the 1st half of the chorus
He thought a lot about how to incorporate the word “smile” into the choreo, since the song is called “Smile Again”: drawing a smiley face with the fingers; and the hand reaching up when it’s “smillllleee” were some of what he came up with

“Smile Again" was a difficult piece to choreograph - in the chorus there aren’t a lot of notes, and the melody slows down. Kazuki debated how much he wanted the choreo to match the beats for a while. He didn’t want the choreo in the chorus to be too sharp. He was going for smooth and gentle.

He thought of the camera move first

He liked choreographing the 2nd chorus (starting from Shunto’s “Smiilllleee agaiinnnn” to Ryoki’s “kimi wa kirei dah~”), it’s a different approach from choreographing the first chorus and final chorus

Oguri & NOPPO made the parts after LEO’s “Kimi wa kirei da” (chorus, 2nd half)
From Kazuki: “not something you can do simply by memorizing it” (Show-hey says it looks like Oguri & NOPPO’s because it’s a bit more technical+groove)
Oguri: A bit of isolation was used
Kazuki: Everyone probably notices the hands (making the wave) first, but the steps that go along with it is hard
Oguri: Well, you won’t notice it if you miss it 😂
Kazuki: There’s a bit of groove to it~

There’s some rhythms they took but your hands and feet are taking in different beats, so it’s actually difficult to master 👀 (Kazuki’s not good at making these types of choreo)

The same choreo is repeated in the 1st and 2nd chorus, then changed slightly for the final chorus (ex. Show-hey talks about how the hand wave starts from the right hand in 1st chorus, but the right hand ends the wave in the final chorus)

In the 1st chorus your head tilts, but you don’t in the final chorus of “Smilllllleee again”
Oguri: If you get used to the choreo, it’s a trap (because the last chorus also doesn’t have that extra sound during that line~ 👀)

NOPPO made SouMana’s choreo during their rap relay
Wanted to bring out SouMana’s friendship / closeness

From shoji: “NOPPO’s seen them since the audition so he knows which parts is good for someone”

From Kazuki: Soumana’s back and forth is real nice, but other members at the back are also doing their part

Day 1 of making this choreo was HARD; Oguri was at another event so could only help starting Day 2 but it was going smoothly by then

From Kazuki: NOPPO’s choreo matches the lyrics really well (“Ame no oto” *step*, “mada nureta hodo” *step*)

Shoji choreo starting from LEO’s “kimi ga ita~ sono kako ga~...” & Ryuhei’s “nandomo sagashite”
From show-hey, “Shoji’s choreo is tough…” 😂

From Kazuki & show-hey: This part is actually difficult, the viewers should all try it. It’s hard! (during RyuRyu’s “namae wo yondee”), you need to use isolation (from show-hey). It’s great that everyone [in BE:FIRST] can do it.

There are a lot of melodies / notes? That are specific to the parts shoji choreographs, so he wanted to include them

And that's it! Hope you found this interesting. It certainly did for me!
