No No Girls – SKY-HI's comments on No No Girls Round 3 Performances

Other than SKY-HI's IG lives after a No No Girls episode, he also started sharing his thoughts on the girls' performances on Architect (BMSG's fam community on the website CAMPFIRE).

On BMSG's YouTube channel, a shorter digest version was uploaded. The following is a summary of his thoughts.

Enjoy!

Team A / EDEL (Cutie Honey)

🌞: Nice

Kai: From when she starts flipping her hair.. She looks like she likes music
Yuri: She really can change the atmosphere huh

They’re using their faces too!

Hibiki: Her voice sounds a little cracked, probably because of her cold. It happens you know, even with pros, when you get a cold and your voice is croaky. If you have decent training you can somehow pull through a performance. When I caught a cold I couldn’t even vocalize [let alone sing] like this. For Hibiki, knowing she has a cold and her voice is not great but is able to control it and pull this off – I’m seeing the fruits of her efforts in training showing.
Kaede: Here it is, Kaede’s ✨ killer point ✨ (the way she does “hikku hikku shichau no~”). She got me there. She overdid it but she made it look more natural than I thought. At first you might think “I can’t really do that!” but once you overcome that door – it’s quite a wall, even as a pro – I think she overcame it quite well here.

🌞: In that same vein, just now Yuri also had the same line (shikku shikku) and I think she did it pretty well, her expressions really come out in this song (Cutie Honey).
🌞: Yeah! Yuri did good during that ending, like she’s going to stab you in one shot. Mina said she thought she heard Yuri’s shell breaking down and I thought so too.

🌞: I didn’t talk about her when the performance was playing, but Yuju was great~ I had a chance to watch her 2nd Round performance again, that vibe she had for “Dahlia”.. So.. she already has her style, putting other colors – such as CHANMINA’s strong producing [skills] – I can understand that it will take some time for her to soak it in. But you know, even saying “putting colors in”, for good or bad, you don’t know right? Until you do it and see it till the end.

Team B / Black Panther (Black Diamond)

🌞: Team B was amazing right? I feel their intent as part of the “No No Girls phenomenon”. When Koko started with “diva” I wonder if there were a lot of people who came up with a bunch of styles for her. This was right [for her], singing, vocalization, dance, style. For style, a diva.

🌞: I see a lot of potential in Kokona’s rap, in various ways. She hasn’t done a lot of dance but those watching can tell right? She’s already different now compared to before. She’s in her growing period right? I can feel it.

🌞: Yeahhh! She’s got a great voice!
🌞: Your voice is something you create but how you convey it and think about it.. To reach this kind of style hey…
🌞: Awesome! Uweeyy~
🌞: This part going from Chika to Jisoo.. And even this transition in a flash. Vocal technique that’s also really good. It matches the development of the song too. It’s very musical, the way Jisoo cuts off her lines.
🌞: Chika’s smile was lovely too
🌞: When other people are singing, she is singing with her face. Her performance is great too of course, she is very musical..
🌞: You’ve got divas of all different vocal colors in here, one after the other, that’s crazy too
🌞: You can put colors into your singing… I can see Kokona trying to do that. She’s probably the one who I can see what her thought process is and how she does it the most

🌞: This was great~ I really have nothing to say about Team B~

Team C / BURNINC GIRLS (Heaven’s Drive)

🌞: When Momoka opened the song, she already passed Round 3 Screening honestly
🌞: To pull back from this tension!! In rap, particularly melodic rap, what kind of voice you use – how much breath do you release is a key point. Do you wanna go with less breath (sounding sharp and pitchy) or very breathy (lower, husky) to balance that while constantly dancing is something else. And with so much control? What the? I was really surprised with Naoko.
🌞: And here too, they did a good job while sitting down! I’m realizing once again how important body training is.
🌞: I think Asha’s rap is going to get a lot of attention and rightfully so, as a rapper myself, but her dancing is also super good. She has groove and she must’ve had the basics drilled into her. Even when you don’t dance, how you position your hands and such makes you look really cool. Asha’s the type that looks really cool even when you have the video on mute. A very great rapper.

🌞: But [picking] Heaven’s Drive is really exquisite you know. You’ve got 3 girls who have an aptitude for rap showing their solid rap, but you can also see their vocal potential too. When they sing this part too, besides how “good” they do it, you can also see how they use voices.
🌞: This part, Naoko and Akari’s dance was really good. This team is good!
🌞: And yeah, Aika who showed her rap can also show off her vocal skills too. Aika was great right? I can really tell she loves music. I’ll probably say that a lot from here on. I really felt that.

🌞: Their performance was great, something you can listen to. I know mina focused this group as the one with rappers but there’s another point here. I’m like this too so I know. When you rap, compared to singing, it’s a little closer to talking. But if you find your vocalization point, your voice will sound stable. It’s like that for singers that don’t dance, but for rappers especially – really drill in dance, starting from the basics. If your daughters or sons, grandchildren, want to do music, want to rap, get them doing dance, as early as possible. It’s not just about their sense of rhythm, it changes how they pose and position themselves. I wish I had done it more.

Team D / Maru de Zassou (Honnou)

🌞: Kokoa and Rei… They showed that they weren’t going to make this a simple cover. They are probably total opposites, how they think I mean, but both of them have this, “We’re making this world!” UWEEEY! I want to thank them for the tremendous answer they had.

🌞: Sayaka’s expressions really came through in the Third Round! I’m sure she drew from a lot of things. When you communicate, your expressions are important right, normally [proceeds to make a lot of funny faces]. Music is a type of communication too, so it’s not like you have to use it. I’m sure there are people whose facial expressions are always cool, but there’s a big difference between whether you pull it out and you’re aware it’s there or not.
Whether you have it, you’ll pulling it out, not using it, only using 2% all of that is communication. It’s important that you’re aware of the expressions you’re pulling and the emotions that come with it. But when you’re just starting out and your expressions come out that’s a huge step already in terms of opening that door and a requirement. I can really see that from Sayaka, her expressions coming through.

🌞: Mahina’s voice sounds like it’s been through a compressor! You don’t really hear this kind of vocals.

🌞: Even if Koharu’s dancing at the very edge in a 5-member group, she’s got control [of the stage / performance]. How do you say this, her view is wide. She isn’t just “good”, this bit this bit! The outro! [stomps feet] Please look at how Koharu movess during the outro. Eeyyyy I cried when I watched this at the venue.

🌞 tearing up again: It’s not like I’ve always been with them, so I didn’t know what they wanted me to feel but it’s like they said, “We’re going to hit these emotions one at a time”. I once again thought “ahh groups are great”. This team gave an outstanding performance. Thank you.

Team E / Chapter (Kimi ga Suki)

🌞: You know it’s Ringo just from her voice. I think she’s pretty serious-minded towards music. But I think “Kimi ga Suki” group has quite a lot of individuals who are serious.

🌞: What’s interesting with mina is that she’s giving these serious-minded individuals (different from human nature mind you) a serious song not because it suits them, but a screening where she wants to see how it plays out – when a serious-minded individual gets a serious song.

🌞: I think this is the hardest, “Kimi ga Suki” is the hardest.

🌞: Her tone here.. She really wanted to make sure people got the message through her singing, this is about Fumino btw

🌞: I think Ringo’s sincerity towards music will continue to grow…

🌞: The type who has ability but would go with expressions first is also great

🌞: Usually those who are serious tend to be artists, but whether serious-minded people can remember to play around with music or a person who isn’t serious becomes sincere about music... I think there are a lot of people who fall into one or the other pattern.

🌞: I thought, based on Ayami’s dance style, she’s good in hiphop but to be able to adjust like that…

🌞: This is a really sincere team

Team F / Fantastic Girls (Playback Pt. 2)

🌞: This team was crazy! Seriously. Everyone on this team is insane, it’s already crazy [from the start]!
🌞: Expressive even after finishing her line with her face. Nice performance 👍

🌞: I was really surprised Stella.. And Aiko can do this. The kind of surprise that’s “Oh you got this in you.”

🌞: I really have nothing to say, other than “amazing” and “it’s great”, and this team was the only one with everyone passing Round 3 right? I had a lot of thoughts…

🌞: Here too, I thought there a lot of individuals who left a mark… Ah, I want people to check Aiko’s expression here! Then Sara’s second verse… Everyone is really singing with their faces

🌞: Meanwhile, Jewel’s face when Aiko is singing 🤣 It’s a performance, truly.

🌞: It’s a character-heavy song right, but just because it’s character-heavy doesn’t mean it’s easy [to be expressive].. You’ve got five members with five personalities, and their expressions are clearly there. Plus I never imagined Stella would have this kind of voice.

🌞: They’re a group with a lot of groundwork in dance, so when thinking of what to give them, Playback Pt. 2 came up. Doing this song with these group of girls, I once again think CHANMINA’s producing [skills] really super. My hats off to her! I didn’t think Stella, Aiko, and Jewel would be capable of this kind of performance. I think this experience will stay with them, whether during or after No No Girls audition. Performing, living life, expressing yourself, opening yourself up this much is going to be a great power and experience for them, I hope they don’t forget it

🌞: Even Ami and Sara, who we could see matching with a song like Playback Pt. 2 during Round 2, exceeded our expectations. It’s amazing, Team F’s “Playback Pt. 2” was really something else. I really don’t have anything more to say other than it was superb.
