No No Girls – SKY-HI's comments on No No Girls Round 4 Performances
After No No Girls Round 3 performances, SKY-HI's comments on No No Girls Round 4 performances were shared on YouTube.
The following is a summary of his thoughts. Enjoy!
Mina handles the judging, so his thoughts and explanations will be different from what he did in THE FIRST.
🌞 is very surprised with Mahina’s flow in her rap. Her word sense is good too, but he’s most surprised by her flow – “Oh, I’ll rap this way during this part.” He can’t really explain it.
🌞: This is what happens when you do a Creativity Round right. Your performance changes once you’ve created a song from scratch and performed it. Dancers usually say they can “see” the music right. I think it’s the same for singing and rapping, we often say “It’s like the words are dancing” I think Mahina’s kind of like that.
🌞: I don’t think I need to say more about Chika right. Even if people who don’t listen to music see her, they’d go “Woah amazing!” Her performance has a punch to it. Her “Mama ni kakete maiban cry / Inochi kakete utattoutai” [I call mama every night / I’m gonna sing with all my life” line was crazy. It was just 1 line wasn’t it? But she said everything.
🌞: A good lyrics is something that is meticulous and detailed, but more than that, what’s precious and makes a lyric great is that one sentence that conveys everything you want to say. It really caught me, and then after that they all had good flow and showed great rap right? It really got me excited.
🌞: Asha is amazing isn’t she? As a rapper she has great skills but she also has great potential. And she did shoutouts at the beginning right? If you’re a rapper you definitely do that. Being able to do shout outs really shows whether you’re the real deal or not. Though mina’s also right 😩 “You can’t break the mold unless you know what the mold is”, [Gives the example of Picasso] So unless Asha [knows and breaks the mold] I think she’ll have to fight completely originally, especially since she strongly identifies herself as a rapper. She needs to dive into it, something like a textbook.
🌞: When I look at the lyrics again, the word choice is interesting. I’m interested in what kind of nutrients (education, upbringing) they had to become like this. I can feel the build up.
🌞: Koko said in the episode that she was sad that her top line wasn’t used. I don’t think she needs to be too worried. [Our] creativity screenings don’t work like a creativity competition, we evaluate everything up to how you perform your piece. My impression of her is that she's someone who knows what her style is and how to make it shine. Even someone who isn’t well-versed in music can look at her and say she’s good, for sure.
🌞: And all members of Playback Team passed Round 3 right? I wonder if all of them hit some walls in this Round 4 screening. They were able to show their personality through a strong song so… I guess mina wanted to see more sides to them, I do think she amped up the difficulty… But Sara’s expression after the dance break, I don’t think I’ve seen her like that, her aesthetic is not the same with everyone else. I hope she takes pride in that, a lot of it.
🌞: We haven’t seen Kokoa rap at all have we? RyonRyon sensei talks quite often about how [artists] who sell well utilize their noses. The way Kokoa uses her nose is excellent. It’s like when mina says she’s someone who is smart. It’s like.. She has a good balance of a) the ideas she has [for her part / performance] and b) her own ability to be able to pull it off. She knows all of that. She’s really trained herself to look at herself both subjectively and objectively. It makes me jealous, almost.
🌞: I wonder if Yuri is a shy type, she’s kind of similar to Ran in a way? Lol [Like Ran] was able to open up through Creativity Screening. Other than facing yourself, opening up to others is difficult too right. I think she still has a lot of doors left to open. She’s smiling more, is my impression.
🌞: Ami is brilliant too right? In a song like Playback, where it’s easy to present your character, she pulled it off pretty near perfectly. I can understand mina feeling like [Ami] didn’t really exceed expectations or her performance falls in line with what she expected, but it’s like she’s going one way but she’s going the other way.
🌞: Sometimes you have more ways to make yourself stand out than you thought did.
🌞: This is quite a unique line-up isn’t it? Jewel was pretty good wasn’t she? [I thought] Oh so you can use your voice like this too. Someone who has less experience, things like this comes, like Mahina’s 3.5 Screening, seeing someone have their “Oh I can vocalize like this?” moment is so interesting, I’m not kidding. Her use of the mic is really good too, she has good instincts! Plus when her expressions when she’s transitioning. When you perform the camera follows you right, so you’re kind of aware if the camera’s on you or not. So you can sometimes catch moments when you see they’ve relaxed a little bit.
🌞: Like GET OUT in the beginning, Chika and Mahina seemed to have a “Ah, it’s this door this time” moment. So if you get to this round not really getting a hang of what’s going on, your uncertainty shows on your face, especially in this round. I think this screening overall is like an etude. So if you think “I have no role!” it really shows on your face, or even if you decide “I’ll do this part like this” or “I’ll do this part like that”, various things show on your face.
[A comment saying they’ve been paying attention to his explanations since THE FIRST]
🌞: To look cool when your switch is on and off, is a bonus only given to people who put in the tedious, boring work of isolation, rhythm training, stretching, etc.
🌞: Even though I’ve been rapping and making songs in my 20s, I feel like [my training] is not enough. I don’t regret it, because that’s what made me who I am now, how I think, how I feel etc. So I don’t regret it, I am reflective of / reflecting on it.
🌞: There are a lot of comments that said Jisoo’s lyrics hit them right in the heart, that’s her third language isn’t it? [She speaks] Korean, English, Japanese… Doesn’t her Japanese sound great right now? So to write that in her 2nd or even 3rd language and have people relate to it is amazing, isn’t it? I’m really envious of her voice.. But people with good voices… you know how usually people get embarrassed listening to their voices on record right, this is like doing that but 50,000 more times. For people with good voices that is.
🌞: BMSG has a lot of artists with good voices. If anyone here reads their interviews, you often see them say they didn’t like their voices very much in the beginning didn’t they? It’s the same for me too, I get told I seem the type. It’s a rite of passage, it’s tough. So it’s kind of like I have confidence in my voice because I overcame that – it comes out strongly when you’re on stage, your whole attitude.
🌞: Saying you’re not confident in creativity, you’re stuck on lyrics, you didn’t practice enough, or there are people better than you, etc. it really doesn’t matter. When you think about whether you’ve confronted and you’ve loved your own voice enough. To love the life you’ve lived is very difficult, but if you don’t do that you have no allies with you once you’re on stage.
🌞: Stella’s attitude doesn’t disappear and I think that’s her weapon. Isn’t she someone you want to imitate? Usually if people want to copy you, they become pop icons. Her presence is very iconic and she has dance experience on top of that… It would be good for her to work on opening herself up and looking at [what happens], I can see her being a chameleon. Would be interesting to see her honing one thing as her own.
🌞: Ahh, kamakiri kamakiri x5 Oshiri kamakiri right? [Everyone] laughed a lot
🌞: Good sense even down to the millisecond!
🌞: Koharu is like an actor… These days no matter your gender identity you’re an actor right? And RyonRyon sensei often says, “Be an actor”, she tells me that too. She’ll tell my artists it’s like taking off a layer of clothes, and when you put it back on too, you know. I feel like Koharu’s exactly like that, the way she switches on is good too; how she puts on her clothes. Training the basics! Something that isn’t born unless you are constantly evaluating yourself and praising yourself. I can sense her efforts from her performance and attitude, that’s how you see someone’s character. Amazing right? I think “Kamakiri” will become a famous scene after No No Girls is over, lol. “Kamakiri” was great wasn’t it? She’s a creative person
🌞: Momo’s “n~AH” was super good. With her and how she plays around [with notes / words] as long as she puts it in, it’s interesting. I think she’s actually a pretty serious person, but on stage she looks like she plays the most. I think she has some trickster side to her, I think that’ll make it interesting.
🌞: Kaede is good too, the way she plays with things. It’s not that dreams can’t come true the older you get.. At least how you approach dance mentally. She has great artistry and I see it. Not just her vocals but who she is as a performer, how she’s like creatively, how she approaches producing.
🌞: Fumino I think has been strongly expanding what she’s good at after Round 3. She must have opened a lot of doors during this time. I think she has probably been trying and experimenting with different styles and this is the result. By opening all those doors and seeing where that leads you, builds up your experience, confidence, and pride. She built off on her past and really let her voice ride her through this one.
🌞: Sayaka is great too. Like Jigg and Chanmina said, she has a catchy voice. I think I’ve run out of things to say besides that, because I think so too. Once she sings you wanna know more… When you perform what you’ve made, it’s like showing someone your diary. I feel like Sayaka did that. In earlier rounds we weren’t really sure what she was good at, but this round she had a, “This is my diary!” attitude, her hunger, how she shows it, were really great. Of course her potential and experiences up to now are excellent, there’ll be things she’ll need to finetune but I really feel her potential.
🌞: I really have nothing to say about Naoko. As an artist, she’s perfect. You have to have certain deliveries for certain types of songs right. Convey all the feelings here, be alluring there. If you gotta be charismatic, be charismatic. And Naoko… is definitely highly skilled, that’s a given, but what technique does she use for x, y, z kind of delivery. She’s not bragging, “Hey I got an F-1, super fast car! Isn’t it good?!” and posting it on insta, but a, “I got an F-1 car and got here in five minutes!” So how she uses her highly skilled techniques, I’m really moved by her delivery.

Team G / You are the One (AMI, KOKOA, YURI)
