SKY-HI – Nothing but thanks to NTV for this historic decision (Translation by shizuna)

Translated from SKY-HI's interview series with Nikkei, "Be myself, for ourselves"

Original interview, 92nd installment from July 13, 2023.

Soon after BE:FIRST’s debut (Nov., 2021), we talked about the need for a new music program, one that focuses on boy groups and their singing and dancing. It wasn’t just with NTV but with various other places. However, as BMSG grew as a company and staff increased, it wasn’t right for me – as a leader of an organization – to do this or that because I wanted to. Even though this project was a good thing to do, there were countless other things that needed to be done first. It honestly took me a long time to actually start working on this project.

It was at such a time that it was absolutely necessary to have someone outside, or another organization, that would listen to my thoughts and carry this project with me. NTV came to mind, because of the relationship we’ve built. It was right around the release of BE:FIRST’s “Bye-Good-Bye” (May 18, 2022 release), I think. NTV was also looking at their numbers (BGB was a huge success), and I felt like we were one step closer to making this project a reality.

Later, they said, “how does December [2022] sound?”, but December was busy, including BE:FIRST’s tour. To avoid excessive noise for BMSG, we agreed to schedule the [D.U.N.K.] Showcase for March [2023].

Note: In December, SKY-HI released THE DEBUT; had Round A Ground Tour 2022; Novel Core was on his “No Pressure” tour; BE:FIRST were in the December leg of their first tour and also preparing for year-end award shows, AAA, and Kouhaku.

With regards to YouTube, I told them there was no point in doing this if they cannot distribute the content on YouTube. They responded with, “I like that”.

It took two months after the Showcase for it to actually start on YouTube, but it was still a historic moment. I have nothing but thanks for NTV. It was the first time NTV were making a full-scale program on YouTube, probably the first time for a commercial broadcaster too. If anything, it was probably something of a taboo, they likely went through a lot of approval processes in order to proceed with this project. Unlike TV programs, the length was not fixed so there was freedom in how to create it. Since we have a group of highly talented and experienced people, I think we can continue to find ways to make it better, or I hope so.

D.U.N.K. Showcase (TV Show) is hosted by NTV, streamed by Hulu, and there will also be a 15-hour broadcast on CS (May 28, 2023). Although BMSG will not have monetizing rights on the program, the benefit for us is that the content will serve as a leverage in future negotiations for appearances with artists from other countries. Of course, what we get from this project is a short-term income, though the amount of money isn’t small by any means. More than that, for the people and companies participating to talk with people overseas; for the Japanese dance and vocal scene to connect with the global community, the benefits are far greater in this regard.

If NTV can create a business scheme that considers additional production costs to create YouTube programs [and those costs] can be recovered through YouTube – I can see new possibilities for content production in the future. I want to do my best there, so I want everyone to watch [D.U.N.K. YouTube ver.] a lot, lololol.
