SKY-HI – The mindset BE:FIRST wanted to show to society with their 2nd album
Translated and summarized from SKY-HI's interview series with Nikkei, "Be myself, for ourselves"
Original interview, 115th installment from August 29, 2024.
Boss's masterplan with all songs by BE:FIRST from debut up to their first album (BE:1) was that it'll take them to their first dome concert. He had this goal and sound he envisioned for them way before BE:FIRST's debut.
With the 2nd album though, he's more flexible. While the second album is an extension of the first one, it is also for the members to explore what they want to sound like, what they want to convey, and produce something that suits them now.
Compared to a solo artist, there is seven of them -- just changing the angle a little bit can mean they stand out seven times more than before. The world is hardly considered peaceful - he's sure there's many things they can sing about, should sing about, and music that is necessary in this day and age.
A main theme of 2:BE is the idea of "praise" how BE:FIRST just naturally praise each other when they're together, especially in a period of time where people like to drag and push each other down, he thinks this is even more important.
- In the J-ent. industry, people often say that, "Well group members don't necessarily need to get along well as long as they get the job done", boss is uncomfortable with that statement because if you go through the trouble of making / producing a group, there should be a feeling of, "I want to work together because of these members and this group", and he thinks groups should have that kind of vibe about them.
Boss says every achievement is worth celebrating. He says they celebrate every single milestone, big or small. When BE:FIRST finished their dome concert, it wasn't like, "Oh no biggie, we still got a long way to go" but a "We've worked hard and we did it! Yeahhh!", "We're amazing!", "We rock!" etc. Because celebrating achievements makes us happier and leads to self-affirmation and affirmation of others - hence the reason for 2:BE's lead song, "Blissful", as a way to present the spirit and value of self-love & self-affirmation that leads to affirmation of others.
boss listens to a lot of albums that have an interlude track in them, but his impression is that not many "groups" do it. He thinks it's a waste if groups can't do that. What's more, he gets the impression that the order of the songs and the meaning of the member(s) who sing the songs aren't important either.
He thought about an interlude track when the boys were making "Glorious". The boys are praising themselves for the journey they have made since THE FIRST in "Glorious", and while he believed that the people listening to Glorious will get that message, he wanted to emphasize that time (from THE FIRST) even more, so he took the audio track from THE FIRST to use as the BE:0 interlude before the track fades and goes into "Glorious".
2:BE was his way of giving the boys opportunities to grow. As professionals in the music industry, it's only natural that you want to make music and be able to do that on your own. You can't keep going along with requests and release whatever you want either.
As a producer, he believes he needs to be aware of the responsibility he has to create opportunities for the boys to grow and develop their artistry. By being involved in creating a song, maybe they'll come to like music more, by loving music they may develop an ear for music and become a better singer. He also believes that by getting them to understand and take part in the production process, members can exchange opinions on song(s) in more depth.
Up until 2:BE when he shares with BE:FIRST that he wants them to do "x kind of song" the boys don't just say, "Oh that's cool!" but will actually say things like, "The song before had a 2000s kind of flavor, so we're going with a 2010s kind of vibe this time?" He thinks they better understand his intentions on why he gives them the song he does, so he hopes by going through this process more often, they can come to understand music much more deeply.
That's the great thing about having members involved in production. The downside is that it takes a lot of time LOL
If he was just recording and producing for himself (or songs for the boys), he can wrap everything up in 2-3 hours. By involving the members, it takes twice as long and sometimes members / him will have to take it home to continue working on it together.
🌞 : 2-3 hours of my time is very expensive [boss laughs]
Although it takes a lot of time, he thinks it is an irreplaceable and invaluable experience for the boys when he thinks about their future. Moreover, by going through this process the boys will have a more concrete idea of what they need to do and want to do, what kind of music creator to reach out to, and so on. If communication with music creators improve and becomes more precise over time, the precision of the work (song) will improve too.
Boss thinks it's his mission to make everyone in the music industry think that, "BMSG is a group of people whose quality of music and musical consciousness is guaranteed."
Boss is letting the boys do what they like, he just paves the way and makes sure that the path he makes leads them to the right answer. Since he is in that position, he sees the future a little bit. He can see the boys' dreams in a few years time and he's looking forward to it [boss laughs]
Hope you enjoyed!
