Translated and summarized from SKY-HI's interview series with Nikkei, "Be myself, for ourselves"

Original interview, 117th installment from October 10, 2024.

boss always thought that America was honest and sincere about entertainment.

In Japan, a lot of people listen to music based on "prior information" so the success or failure of artists appearing at music festivals is often already decided before they perform.

It wasn't hard for him to imagine the crowd in the US having a good reaction to beef, even if they didn't really listen to BE:FIRST. It made him think they'll be alright if they just keep doing what they're doing.
boss had to bring in the sound (PA) person they usually have for the LA performance. They all had to think about things that are "different from the usual." It's going to be like this no matter where they perform in the future, but he'd hate to say, "Well, we didn't perform well because it's different from the usual".

but when he thinks about beef performing at SUPERSONIC 2021 without in-ear monitors, the LA performance this time is very different and it wasn't a huge issue. And beef has been able to perform their best no matter what festival or live, so he wasn't worried at all.

as for the LA performance, rather than gathering them all together and have a thorough talk to them at length beforehand, he kinda just grabbed and talked to one member whenever. He spent a lot of time backstage in the dressing room, and he thinks they talked 8 times more nonsense (than usual) 🤣

boss also met EDEN (producer for ATEEZ) at LA. He considers him a good friend (shinyuu). They're close in age, and their career paths are very similar. He's grateful that EDEN understood their situation. They also have similar sensibilities (musically) so whether it's doing a session or just talking, boss enjoys time with EDEN.

He thinks it was a live overflowing with love, gratitude, and respect. It wasn't just EDEN but also staff and PA from KQ Ent. too. The cameraman-san would say, "They're cool", "What's this guy's name?", or "Should I film him like this?" etc. everyone discussed together how to best support beef on to the stage for the LA performance. Of course the feeling of welcome was great from the audience, but it was very much the same backstage too, and he thought was worth mentioning.

Beef's LA performance was only for 2 days, but the cheers were loud the moment BE:FIRST appeared on Day 2. It made him think by doing a great job on the first day it helped create local buzz. He thinks the task of performing on an away stage like this is like "storing water" in a tube – this is not the goal but a process that they must keep doing repeatedly, and that by doing a great job here, the audience can see BE:FIRST elsewhere, see them and recognize them.
- He thinks the fancams posted and shared on SNS also contributed a lot to the "water storage" process 🤭 because that way people who couldn't go were able to see beef. He wants to keep creating chances "storing water" in the future too.

he thought beef did a great job even if they still had lingering effects of jet lag, and he thinks the boys themselves felt a great sense of accomplishment. The crowd cheered at every move they make, and he thinks that what entertainment is supposed to be. He doesn't think there needs to be a "Way to vibe" or "Way to enjoy lives" at all, are those words even necessary? 🤨 😂 When he starts vibing to someone's show, he often gets told, "You're really into it" 😂 “but if you go see a show by your favorite artist, the performance is super good, it's natural to get into it and dance.”

The members of BE:FIRST and THE FIRST gathered because they feel the same way he does, about music, lives, and entertainment. So he thinks that made it easy to perform for the American audience in a way. They had a lot of fun. He wants to bring all other artists soon 🤣

boss has said for a long time he wants BMSG to be the most famous company in Asia and he wants BMSG Artists to be the most dynamic? hyped artists in Asia. To do that, they must simply increase the opportunities artists can perform abroad. There's 365 days in a year, they'll do what they can to make it work for their schedule

the performance at LA switched boss's mindset from "maybe we can do it" to "We can do it, definitely, more than we think 😤 ". Although boss does want more of his artists performing overseas, there is still "domestic demand" and their schedule in Japan pretty much fills them up for the whole year so it's difficult. It also takes time and money.

When talented artists do their best in their field, they can see / feel the results in the reactions and numbers. He thought the LA performance was a great harvest not only for him, but for beef, the staff, and BESTYs in Japan. He thinks because they have been using the word, "world" since the auditions (THE FIRST), BESTYs also hope and have this dream of "the world" along with them.

boss performed in LA too (RAG 2017) and had the "I can do it overseas" feeling as well, but he didn't have the support of his management company at the time, so he had to give it up 🥲 He thinks anyone who has performed in the US and had a good experience have a good feeling from it. With recent trends in the music scene, like Kpop, and the States being a country of immigrants, there isn't a lot of "It's difficult for Asians" anymore, and most American companies are more, "You're neat. Let's do business in America too."

He thought Japanese fans are allergic to artists leaving Japan, he was like that for a while too, but he thinks it's great that BMSG doesn't have that atmosphere about them.

because of his experience and knowledge performing overseas, boss thinks he doesn't need to take "overseas stage" as something soo different or take it too seriously. He does think he should be aware of the cultural differences and expect that troubles may occur simply because it's a different environment. But he's sure he can handle them with a calm mind and they would be fine.

he wants to go overseas more in the future - more festival appearances and solo shows overseas. Not limited to US because Asia is also changing rapidly. The region is very different now from five years ago when he was touring and producing so he wants to look into that more closely. He wants to work hard so that he can perform in any country in the world, it's what he wanted to do from the beginning 🔥
