Translated and summarized from SKY-HI's interview series with Nikkei, "Be myself, for ourselves"

Original interview, 119th installment from December 19, 2024.

This would be their third year, but beef would be considered "dome artists" now (now meaning: 2024), and boss wanted them to be artists that can close a festival.

This year was also the first time they took beef band with them to music festivals. He thinks beef have acquired the musicality and sense needed to lead a band and are a suitable presence (in festivals).
Boss expected them to perform better than before, and he's grateful that beef showed more coolness than he expected.

Boss thinks performing a live version of a song =/= performing live with a band. Even if the boys aren't holding instruments, they need to be as one with the band. It wouldn't be cool and would look like "someone else plays for them."

Beef already loves music and are used to performing with their band. They didn't really prepare or set anything up for the festivals. They "did what they usually do". They have watched boss perform with his band, have been in boss's place to produce songs, reherase, and give directions and communicate with his band, so it isn't something unfamiliar to them.

For a boy band to perform at a rock festival, they need to be aware that they are a subculture or heresy, and have the right mindset, knowledge, respect, and love for the culture. All of this is connected, and it's not just about "I love rock festivals" or "I'm happy to be performing there." If you don't have the knowledge, you can't respect them or love them. If you can perform well with that mindset and show that attitude, it will definitely be cool.

beef is meeting those expectations and if they add in a band (that has the same mindset) the audience will think, "Oh hey, that's the same artist we like!". This is all part of the Summer Music Festival 3-Year-Plan. In a recent [Nikkei] interview, BE:FIRST is seeing an increase in interest among men in their teens and 20s, so boss feels their efforts are steadily paying off.

Context: In the "Talent Power Ranking 2024" published by Nikkei Entertainment! in its July 2012 issue, BE:FIRST ranked third in the boy group rankings for rapid growth. The demographic that is paying attention to them is women in their 40s, followed by men in their 20s and teenage boys. Outside of the 40s and 60s, they are more popular with men, showing a different distribution from that of typical boy groups.

It took beef three years to be headliners. He thinks to be chosen among other rock bands is something that is essential for the boys' experience and to understand, and something they value deeply. They are not just doing this to sell, they want to create a new culture; in order to do that, they need to be respected by other cultures. Boss thinks [BMSG / BE:FIRST] has their own stories, drama, and attitudes that has led them to where they are right now and he thinks he's seeing the results at the moment.

to put it simply, if this was an Italian food festival, having Saizeriya for a few days is probably acceptable (lol), because no matter how delicious Ootoya is, it wouldn't be acceptable as the "main" for an Italian food festival. Although Saizeriya is different from authentic, Italian restaurants, Saizeriya has its own philosophy and love for Italian food, and should take pride in it if they were selected as the main dish for an Italian food festival.

Context: Saizeriya is an Italian restaurant chain in Japan that's well known for serving Italian food for cheap
Ootoya is also a restaurant chain in Japan, but they do Japanese dishes!

[interviewer said boy groups had more presence in this year's rock festivals and credits this to a) rise of bgs in the jpop music scene and b) be:first proactively appearing in festivals]
boss says beef isn't the first group to appear in rock festivals so he doesn't want to take all the credit. He will admit that BE:FIRST has created a few paths, not limited to this one and it's a tailwind for other boy groups [to follow]. He thinks this is a good thing, and hopes it spreads among other boy groups. He wants to think if other bgs pave the way, then they benefit from that too, and they did. Culture is something you make with everyone, so he sees this as a positive trend.

On BMSG POSSE

boss finds POSSE fun. He thinks out of all the serious-minded artists out there, they're the most silly. He feels a little apologetic that one crew is actually a CEO lol 😂 POSSE activities made him realise once again he has always wanted to form a crew. POSSE is very different to what he imagined back then. Of course, POSSE is not just about him, it's for his artist, for BMSG, but he feels freedom in POSSE and really enjoys it the more he does it.

He wants POSSE to be the freest crew in the world 🔥 When POSSE first started they were all quite serious and it was hard to let loose and be goofy because they were all used to how they operated as soloists. But he says POSSE isn't something you do forcefully, the more they did it together, they got the hang of it and the more they were all able to goof around [boss laughs]. “The point is that we have to goof around seriously, but it's hard to goof around seriously.” They're already sweating and messing around but they can't show - to customers of course - but also to other members of POSSE that they're not cool. So it's actually a highly pressurised environment for all of them, but boss thinks that's what makes it fun.

Before a POSSE stage, boss always asks, "WHO CAN BE THE MOST SILLY TODAY?" I'm good at that sort of thing, so maybe I'm teaching them how.
Boss thinks Core is the most silly on stage (on purpose) and the most similar to him. Boss himself is reminded of his roots coming from an all-boys school [boss laughs]
🦀 would tell 😈 a secret but 😈 would talk about it loudly in front of 🌞
😈 : so 🦀 about what you said the other day...
🦀 : I'm sorry Core 🙏 😩 💦 We shouldn't say it in front of boss!! [boss laughs]
🦀 : You're the worst~ 😭 This senpaiii 😭
Not wanting to lose eddy will say
🦀 : Well, Taro do your best. Taro is doing pretty well, so I'll go first, but don't slack off 😤
boss says it's always like this backstage with POSSE

Context: Taro is Novel Core's given name.

boss thinks 🫧 gets into POSSE differently compared to when he's with beef or mazzel

POSSE has an album and one man live planned, the live will be at Toyosu Pit on 12/11 a day before boss's bday and he wants to look forward to it.

they perform each other's solo songs at POSSE, but POSSE is more than just two people so POSSE is POSSE no matter how many of them are there.

POSSE has collaborations with artists from Japan and abroad
- one of them is ZOOM in October, with boss, Core, and Changmo from Korea. By the time of the interview they finished filming the MV and boss says it's probably his favorite MV he made in 24 years. He'd be happy if it reaches the world!

boss says looking at the population of Japan, he thinks they won't be able to focus solely on the domestic market of Japan in the not-so-distant future. Even if that doesn't happen, he still has will and awareness to be active globally. This was difficult to do by simply staying in Japan before, but sometimes - unexpectedly - they find themselves spreading overseas. When they do get to a point where they are being listened to overseas, he thinks it will be beyond anyone's imagination.
- but he says, even for an established artist like CHANGMO was amazed that he could film an MV in Japan. 🌞 "CHANGMO was going, “Doing a live in Japan, filming an MV.. has been a dream of mine. Mooomm!! I've made ittt!” so I was thinking there are still artists who are like that."

boss has been introduced to various artists and agencies, with his career growing as a producer and CEO they are also interested in him. He wants to take the opportunity to get to know more people and talk to them. If there's a good feeling, I'd like to work together more.

Whether CHANGMO, Stamp and DaBoyWay (Thailand), who he's worked with in the past. He all felt they had the same feeling. Reddy from Korea is still one of his best friends, Ja Mezz is also a good friend. There are many others, but he thinks it's wonderful that his collabs with Asian artists in the past remain connected to his present. He wants to continue to actively invite others and be invited by others.

Hope you enjoyed!
