On BMSG's 5th anniversary, Nikkei Entertainment interviewed BMSG Artists on the milestone and shared some fun trivia and interactions they've had with other artists in BMSG.
Nikkei Entertainment interviewed the following artists in BMSG:
Novel Core
Aile The Shota
MANATO and RYUHEI (BE:FIRST)
KAIRYU and TAKUTO (MAZZEL)
TAIKI (BMSG Trainees / STARGLOW)
HANA
This particular post is Nikkei Ent.'s interview with Novel Core.
In a good way, koa says what he envisioned five years ago is completely different to the reality he is seeing now. A lot of fun and interesting things have happened in the past five years: he gained a lot of friends in a short period of time, these friends aren’t limited to the artists, but managers, staff, labels staff, and OUTERs. He’s grateful that he has so much support as he goes at each project.
Koa once again says that boss is manifesting all of his visions. Koa was asked by boss about joining BMSG in March, 2020. Six months before BMSG was established, boss had told him (at a yakiniku restaurant in Shibuya) that the venue for BMSG FES has just been secured, but boss hasn’t come up with a name for the audition yet [THE FIRST] but boss wants the group that comes out of that audition to have a dome tour and world tour in the next 4-5 years. He also told koa that in between all this he will debut the second boy group… etc etc. Koa says it’s quite scary that literally all of that has come true.
Although koa is often referred to as “BMSG’s eldest son”, he never felt like he was above or below boss when interacting with him, and even as more boys (and girls) have now joined the company, koa sees and treats everyone fairly. They are all nakama and his friends, just that what they are all doing is different.
- Other artists in BMSG have things that he doesn’t have, and vice versa. He thinks this creates a genuine desire to learn and grow from each other
For the past five years, Koa has been grateful every single day that he is in BMSG. After performing at a festival he thinks all artists want a place they can return to. Because koa has a place he can return to is why he can go out into the world without fear; show off who he is and make the scene bigger. It is thanks to BMSG that he feels happiness in representing [the company] and do all of this fearlessly every day.
When Core’s career started under Zeebra, he spent his own money to create his album. He was more of a lone wolf at the time, “I can do all of this myself.” Once he joined BMSG, he met a new him where he enjoys creating something with others.
- In the past five years, he’s learned that there are a lot of people involved in his projects and what he wants to do, so it’s been a learning process of how to convey his enthusiasm about it to his team so that it motivates them; how to manage difference in opinions; and how to adapt and adjust so they are still headed towards the same goal.
- Koa values what Hidaka told the boys in THE FIRST, “There is never a time when you are 100% right, nor is there ever a time when you are absolutely 100% wrong” when it comes to his team. He values the perspective and input of his team, and he thinks it’s necessary that everyone on his team is aware of this too. Koa and his team place a big importance on never creating absolutes.
Before the company’s 5th anniversary, there was a chance for Koa to reflect on how the past five years have been for BMSG, and what you need in order to face yourself with honesty, and he thinks it’s because what BMSG is aiming for and the world they want to create, resonates with a lot of people now and there is a lot of support. It isn’t all talk or quick success, nor is it to “get with the trend”. He thinks the song they sing about is a good chance for all of them: artists, staff, fandoms to reflect and look back on these five years.
They return to an outdoor venue for BMSG FES this year, 3 years since their first one (BMSG FES ‘22), so Koa talked a lot with Shota about the lyrics for GRAND CHAMP. While Koa wanted to “take pride in their success” he thinks it’s just as important to remember that this journey wasn’t achieved by their own strengths / powers alone. He wants to live in a way that does justice to that principle over the next five or ten years. GRAND CHAMP became a song that always brings him back to his roots so he’s looking forward to performing it.
Words like “BMSGism” and “SKY-HI”ism has been thrown around in the past five years, but Koa emphasizes that they are helped and supported by a lot of people in the music they make and the performances they put on, so he genuinely just wants to be cool as a person. While a huge premise at BMSG is valuing the feeling of excitement and having fun, and to extend that feeling of fun for as long as possible, he thinks it’s also important to be conscious and aware of what happens behind the fun, “What / Who is supporting and helping us have this much fun?” If things start to wobble a bit, Koa thinks it’s good for the company when artists and staff can support each other and help fix things.
He thinks it’s necessary to lose the gap between BMSG’s public image and what boss told him BMSG is as a company, “BMSG isn’t just a company that produces boy groups, it’s a company that makes and shares good music and good entertainment.”
While BE:FIRST and MAZZEL are doing their best, for the solo artists unless they all cherish the scenes that form their roots and sources of inspiration, and give back to them in various ways, boss’s words will be difficult to realize.
Koa says what they can do is engage in activities that convey the appeal of BMSG to the outside, always mindful of representing BMSG. For him, he is doing the best he can with what he has at his disposal.
BMSG in one sentence: A place to belong. For an artist like him, whose [artist] DNA is a mix of genres and cultures, he had felt like he was fighting a lone battle in the music scene. He thinks BMSG is a company that houses all kinds of artists and all kinds of people, and no matter which person it is, the principle is always, “increasing the number of right answers”
3 Big BMSG Events:
1. BMSG Game Center - during GeCen in the go kart race, Shota suddenly stepped on the accelerator. He’s so forward-thinking releasing “IMA” that reflects that race perfectly, lol.
2. The birth of BMSG POSSE - boss was due to appear in the music festival, “ODD BRICK FESTIVAL 2022” and boss said if he’s going he might as well take the solo artists with him. What started from there was something Koa found super fun and interesting, and it grew into BMSG POSSE. Everyone in posse knew this was the start of something in that moment.
3. Starting voice training - Up until now, Koa was very against it, “I definitely won’t do it! 😠”, but as his live performances demand more physical strength and stamina, he felt it was necessary. This was especially felt in the final two shows of his tour, so he’s started voice lessons with RyonRyon sensei.
A message of thanks and a complaint

Reiko. This past year, there’ve been many times where I am saved by the purity he shows off in his activities. He loves fun things, and he loves seeing people having fun too. On the flip side, he is someone who is afraid of hurting others and also afraid of being hurt themselves. When I am seeing that purity right in front of me, it saves me by returning me to my roots.

edhiii boi lolololol. We’re so close it’s as if we are blood-related brothers. Sometimes when I'm swamped with work and can't reply to messages, I wish he wouldn't ask me “Did I do something wrong?” the next time we meet. It makes me worry if he actually did do something 😂
Someone you’re envious of?
Kanon. There are many times I’m surprised at how observant he is. When he MCs he can smoothly pass the conversation to someone who hasn’t talked much, and he is very aware of where the cameras are. And his calmness is scary. Oh, and I want Mahina’s voice.
Hope you enjoyed!
