On the BE:FIRST YouTube channel, a video was uploaded of SOTA and ReiNa discussing the making of the choreography in Mainstream.

Video here

Below is a rough summary of what they discussed. Technical terms are hyperlinked!
It's best to enjoy these as you watch to help with understanding!

Background
Thought of the choreo as the song was made (Souchin)
Really wanted to make the choreo for the song once it was done
Souchin wanted the choreo to leave an impact so gave ReiNa a call and asked

Souchin and ReiNa knew about each other from the dance scene, and always talked about wanting to collab / dance in the future but the opportunity never came – until “Mainstream”!

Souchin really wanted to show off the essence of dance with this choreo, and charm a wide variety of viewers / audience with it – whether they’re people who’ve never danced before, dancers who have tons of experience, or they’re watching it via video, watching it at an arena or dome, he wants them to think “oh their dance is great!” when they see “Mainstream” MV / BE:FIRST. When he was thinking of who could help him, only ReiNa came to mind!

Making the choreo
Souchin didn’t decide who will be in charge of which parts – both him and ReiNa met at the studio with no expectations and just slowly designed the choreo together as they went through the song. They slowly weaved in what the other could do during the planning.

ReiNA – wants to provide what’s the “right” thing to everyone

Mainstream – choreo breakdownnnnn
Intro - Souchin’s line
Show off the beats / sound in the intro visually (via Souchin but also the members)
Souchin did his part, but ReiNA designed the other six members’ parts

Ryoki’s line
16-beat in the steps; use the body to show off the fast / slow movements
Both Souchin and ReiNa did this part together

LEO’s line
Hip-hop and Animation moves mixed in

Ju’s line to MANATO’s line
Thought it’ll be fun if Manato did krumping so he added krumping lol

ReiNa appreciates Souchin telling her about the members, “manato will like this style”, or “I think Junon is good at this” that helped her a lot when choreographing the dance. Usually, she’s not sure what the artists are like when she receives offers to choreograph and she’ll do some research on them. She’s thankful she had Souchin involved in the process.

Chorus
The main choreograph (Ryuhei center) doesn’t change, but visually the other members are moving to different positions for a change (visually).

Both of them didn’t include the bounce in the “mata koko kara” initially, but as they started choreographing they thought the bounce made it look more fun, so they went with that

ReiNa recommends adding a bit of force from the waist than the legs during “mata chokka de zoom zoom zoom” so there’s more groove to your moves

Isolation during the chorus was ReiNa’s idea (she wanted that part to look mysterious and also good on camera)

Furikooooooooooooooooo
Souchin wanted ReiNa to choreograph this particular part
Came up with it in seconds lol
ReiNa was just going with the flow but Souchin was like, “Let’s do that!” → ReiNa: “Wait this?!”
Souchin thought they got this in the bag when they finished this part XD

“Ikizama subete A-A-A-Ar-Art” up to “Heroes, Villains follow me Uh-uh-up”
All ReiNa choreo
16-beat in the way the body moves (it also goes up and down depending on the notes~)

ReiNa says the way your body goes up and down during the furiko part is the same when you do this part ✨ (it’s all connected! *Souchin point*)

Starting from “From the bottom to the top”
ReiNa recommends letting the upper body lean back a little bit, so you kinda look threatening. (Cuz if you do it with your back straight it’s like you’re super serious)

Beef struggled with this in the beginning, and also spent time to make sure they’re in synch.

The little kick at the end of “We’re gonna create the trend” and walking away
Souchin really liked it and worked on this part a lot XD
Not a little kick for funnsies, but a somewhat “yeh we did that” face plus kick.

Manato’s “Kirawarenai you ni egao de”
ReiNa choreo
Footwork = Not a moonwalk but a slide

Ju’s “Mae narae”
Child’s play, exactly as the line says “Line up” XD They were having fun with it
ReiNa: “BE:FIRST get along really well, so I thought it’ll be interesting to do it like this”

JuLeo lines
LITEFEE included

Starting from here is boss’s fave part of the choreo (still done by ReiNa)
LEO’s “Sore ga futsuu da sou ne” to “Ju’s “Mou arikita chi ya meisei ja mokuhyou…”
ReiNa: The notes go lower so I thought everybody should kinda go down

Souchin choreographed his rap part
Souchin’s happy ReiNa complimented on his rapping matching his choreo
Ryoki’s “kita fuku ga kiru”
Made use of his explosiveness and energy in the choreo; really show it off

The instrumentals after Shunto’s “We show you the new standard”
Still ANIMATION but a different kind to the furiko

Souchin disclaimer: I had too much fun so my brain kinda returned to being a dancer

In this part Dancer Souchin returns 🔥

Visually show off parts where there’s no sound using popping (so that you can “see” sounds that aren’t there)

ReiNa: Take notes guys!! Memo, memo memo!
Souchin: Why?!

More on ReiNa’s choreo
Her choreo reflects the notes → if the notes go up, hands / body go up
The first time the hand moves weren’t big but she wanted to make it bigger the second time these lines came.
(Wanted to look like it was a meter on a car??)

Reflect voices and melodies through the dance ✨

ReiNa’s style = Old hip hop + New Style hip hop + popping
She’ll usually try to make choreo that matches the song’s vibe – make it sensual or sexy, but “Mainstream” is her style as it is 😊

The little bit of freestyle after Ryoki’s “we gonna create the trend”
This part is “very RHT” according to Souchin and is also the part where they freestyle and see each member’s personality come through
They both found Ryoki’s bit funny so they watched it again
Ryoki does it differently every time

This has been mentioned by s**t kingz during “Smile Again” and again by Souchin here for “Mainstream”, but Ryoki does indeed do something new every time, whether it’s the dance performance video or the dance practice video

Hope you enjoyed!
