The Nikkei X Trend Forum / Chatbox Summit Tokyo 2024 was held for 3 days, starting July 23 to July 25, 2024, with many panels that are available either in-person, online, or both.
SKY-HI was invited for Day 3 with Assistant Director of Nikkei BP Trend Media Unit, Agatsuma Taku.
He talked about taking BMSG to the world and future plans for BMSG going forward. Below is a summary of the main points he discussed.
- “I want everyone to be happy”
Q: You say the time is ripe, what does that mean?
A: Boss can confidently say there is interest overseas in BMSG / BMSG artists and he can also say his artists are ready too (collab offers from artists in Asia or his artists are asking about collabs)
Q: Why go global?
A: Entertainment is B2C (business to consumer); Japan’s economy isn’t great right now; resources and talent are moving away → ie. He thinks about his trainees’ lives 20 years from now in 2044 – their life by then might be difficult. At the rate JP is going, Jap. ent may be beneath KPop and so would resources and talent, etc. → thus why aiming for global is important. Of course, it isn’t all negative or pessimistic, there are good things and inspiration to take from what has been successful overseas.
Currently the way to global seems to be movie or anime tie-up songs, boss says, “That’s kind of sad” but he also acknowledges that’s the great thing about music. You need songs for CMs, movies, anime, etc.
He thinks there aren’t many success stories (of artists successfully going global), but he thinks [BMSG] is ready.
2 things needed for going global:
1. The company must grow, expand, thus that they can reach more people and other organizations. It’s important that everyone and the people they reach are on the same page and agree on things
2. There needs to be systems and strategies in place for the company to keep going [I’m not sure about this one, but he talks about how in the case that his artists don’t make a big splash overseas, then their artists have a safety net to fall back on instead of the whole venture running the company bankrupt]
Boss kept on using “wakannai” a couple of times, so he said he wants to stop saying that. The MC asked him why, so he started, “Say one of my artists dress up as ninja for a song and that song is a big hit overseas, you start to wonder if you gotta keep on dressing up as ninjas for the rest of your career right?” He thinks it's important to fall back on Quality FIRST, Creativity FIRST, and Artisism FIRST.
Boss: Streaming was created and made so that people can use it freely / no stress in the first place, so it’s a dilemma over how much he wants to say, “don't stream for our sake, stream for yourself”
- Entertainment is the ultimate B2C (business to consumer)
- Here, boss talks about KR, that they’re not only involving other industries (agriculture, tech, food, etc.) but also KPop to liven up KR economy. Including big corporates backing them up, like Samsung and LG
- JP economy is not doing great. This ultimately affects how artists and fans want to spend their money. When you liven up entertainment, you liven up other industries as well and revive JP economy by relation
[Here the MC brings up the numbers the Hallyu Wave has brought for KR but I unfortunately didn’t catch it all, sorry]
Boss believes entertainment can help revive JP economy
-Boss explained about getting rid of the randomised photocards, fans buy the CD they get all members.
-Also explained that fans can purchase additional goods that were usually exclusive to one music shop and now it’s all centralised in BMSG SHOP
- “The practices before are not going to be sustainable in the long-term, but who will make the first move?”
- Boss hopes this brings about change, it’s a method where everyone (music makers, artists, fans) can all be happy
Q: What’s BMSG’s plans for the future?
A: I got too passionate talking about Masterplan that I forgot
BMSG FES – something he wants to keep doing
- Support artists in doing what they like and create such an environment for them. 自由
- He further adds that 自由 doesn’t mean わがまま as in, they selfishly do whatever they want, but that his artists can be themselves and do what they like with ease
- For example, BE:FIRST just had a live overseas
- Other BMSG Artists, not just BE:FIRST, have had offers from overseas to collab
- “Idol = Patience with people and you can’t have it both ways, I’d like to think BE:FIRST is a counter to that, they can Be My Self”
- Boss has told fans he’ll make an album and release it hopefully within this year, since he said that he’s gotta work on it now
- “I’m probably the busiest person in Japan”
- His third time in attendance, with the same MC
- Boss explained that other than RuiTaiNon, there are more trainees than that now [the photo shown of BMSG Artists & Trainees did not include the latest additions]
- When he spoke with the MC last year for the forum there was over 30 employees, there’s over 50 this year
- Trainees: between 11 - 18 years old
- Promises to make everyone’s life good
- Entertainment is an industry where the biggest opportunities are not taken yet, by investing in entertainment there is a way to liven up Japan’s economy

There is a lot of this boss has also mentioned in further depth in his appearance on Economy News Academy appearance last year, it's worth the read too!
Hope you enjoyed!
