Summary of the interview RUI and MANATO had in the ar HOMME vol. 2 magazine.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

RUI has a clear memory of when he first met MANATO. During THE FIRST, he saw Manaty at the conbini with JUNON. RuiRui was thinking, “Wow, they’re already close”
🐧: Oh that? I bumped into 🐢 at the train station and we thought we’d just go together.
⚡: I thought this guy was definitely good at singing!
🐧: You can’t tell from that 😂

MANATO was shocked at how young RUI was in THE FIRST. It made him realize the audition was filled with contestants who had a lot of potential for someone like RUI to be there. He only started talking to RUI during Training Camp.
⚡: Yes, you asked me if I went to the same school as you and we started talking.

SIMILAR BACKGROUND LED TO A DEEPER CONNECTION

MANATO learned that RUI went to the same dance academy as him from a staff member that looked after him.
🐧: He told me, “There’s a kid called RUI, I think he went to the same dance school as you.”
MANATO knew ⚡ was from Fukuoka, so he was happy to know they had another thing in common.
⚡: I got curious about the school so I looked it up and MANATO’s name was there, so I knew 🤣
They were students at the dance school at different times, but MANATO thinks they’re similar in a lot of ways since they have the same roots. ⚡ can be serious when needed, but he can be out of it sometimes or have a tendency to joke around.
⚡: I had no idea 🐧 would change this much
🐧: Oi 😂
⚡: I think me, 🐧, 🐢, 🕺 are the craziest people in BMSG
🐧: I think it’s also crazy that BMSG would house all four of us 🤣 We can just talk out of the blue and out of nowhere. Although we’re all different ages, I feel like we’re all mentally the same age. There’s no generation gap. I’m the happiest when we’re fooling around, right?
⚡: It’s fun! Hehehe

Things they haven’t forgotten from THE FIRST

MANATO thinks they can look back and laugh over the slipper incident now. 🐧 really likes it.
⚡: Yeah, my shoes were in the wash and weren’t dry yet, so 🕺 and 🦁 told me off for wearing slippers…
MANATO thought the whole thing being broadcasted was really funny.
🐧: But did you explain the situation to them?
⚡: I did. I apologised after it happened, but they got angry with me. And then after the audition finished I apologized too.
🐧: Oh really. But it couldn’t be helped right, we had to practice for the screening.
⚡: I’ve looked back and reflected on it.

RUI was behind the cameraman when 🐧 went to the bathroom to cry privately after Ten’s elimination and cried with him.
🐧: Eh? You were there?
⚡: I did, from behind the camera
🐧: Is that so. I wasn’t even aware of the camera from crying so I didn’t even know you saw me.
⚡: You were crying a lot 🐧
🐧: You really were watching lmao. I didn’t plan on crying, but Ten was the same age as me and we shared a room together, so we got really close.
⚡: But everyone cried you know, even SKY-HI, who is the judge.
🐧: Right. I think it’s something you don’t see at all in auditions. We got to brush up our skills and grow together. However, it’s still an audition so some things had to happen. Still, it’s my favorite audition out of all the ones I’ve experienced. I hadn’t been able to be close with other people, so I really value the close bonds I have with the people I met in this audition. We still keep in touch now and hang out. I don’t have a lot of friends close in age in Fukuoka who are singing and dancing, so I’m thankful for SKY-HI for finding talented people around the nation to really motivate me.

Words from SKY-HI

🐧: When Ten was eliminated, SKY-HI said, “Let’s become a group that people think ‘Well, it can’t be helped if these guys passed’” didn’t he? That really resonated with me.
⚡: Me too
🐧: We passed this screening, but we also have a responsibility to those that didn’t. It’s pressure in a good way and made me want to work harder. I decided I want us to be a big group.
⚡’s words he remembers from boss was when he was with boss on tour and he wasn’t sure what the right answer was at the time. He asked boss, “How do I maintain balance?”
SKY-HI said, “Basically, having half reason and half passion. Even if say, reason exceeds your passion, you can maintain a balance and vice versa.” He agreed with boss, between reason and passion,⚡ leans more on the passion side, but he’s working hard on maintaining a good balance between the two. He thinks after getting advice from boss, it’s up to him [what he does with the advice].

MOTIVATING EACH OTHER

⚡’s favorite vocal in BMSG is 🐧’s and says the Trainees often talk about 🐧’s voice in their discussions. They would watch 🐧’s performances on TV or videos and sees it from the POV of a fan. ⚡ is motivated every time.
🐧 says ⚡often sends him a LINE message after a live or festival appearance, “What do you do during practice?”, “How do you do x, y z?”, and thinks he’s a very honest guy.
⚡ says 🐧 has a lot of techniques he wants to use as references and MANATO will talk to him seriously [when he asks], so it makes him want to be serious too.
MANATO says ⚡ fools around a lot, but he is serious and honest too, and is quite stoic. Other than questions for him after a live or festival, ⚡would also send MANATO a message, “Thanks for sending me off!” after 🐧 takes a train with him home. 🐧 thinks it’s a good balance. ⚡ has changed quite a lot visually and has grown quite tall.
⚡: I have and my voice has changed too.

MANATO thinks RUI will be crazy in the next few years. From THE FIRST,⚡ already showed performances that demonstrated his great sense of understanding a song and immersing himself in a song’s universe. All things 🐧 is not good at, so he has great respect for RUI who is a lot younger and has things that he doesn’t. ⚡will have more stage experiences and life experiences, MANATO’s sure that he will be vexed seeing RUI in the future.
⚡: Why?
🐧: Because I can’t do what RUI’s doing when I was his age.

MANATO’s also motivated by RUI’s performances; he’s good at how he appeals to the camera, his facial expressions, etc. and 🐧’s sure it will influence how he performs in the future too.

⚡: I’m so happy! I think it’s super sexy that 🐧 can look so chill when you go full volume and resonant.
🐧: Your choice of words 😂 But I think that’s the kind of character RUI is and you will get to do more because you’re like this. I’m glad RUI and I are in the same company. Let’s sing together some time.
⚡: Me too! Let’s be TEAM FUKUOKA.
🐧: TEAM FUKUOKA 😂😂😂😂😂😂

THEIR GOALS FROM HERE

MANATO doesn’t want to lose to anyone in BE:FIRST, but honestly, he is motivated by everyone in BMSG
RUI thinks so too. He thinks BMSG has people he finds easy to talk to, which really helps him because he’s shy.
MANATO thinks THE FIRST definitely helped break that initial wall everyone had and they can all now just talk frankly.
🐧: Wait, you’re shy?
⚡: Once I got to high school I found it hard to strike up a conversation with people.. I can do it just fine with people at BMSG
🐧 says the initial ice is broken so talking was easier. He thinks RUI has become more open minded since THE FIRST. ⚡is also joking a lot more.
🐧: A while back, you were in a boxing pose and pretended to strike a punch at a BE:FIRST member and said, “If I hadn’t stopped, you’d be dead wouldn’t you?”. Everyone, including SOTA was laughing so hard 🤣
⚡: I haven’t had someone / people who I can talk to or joke around with where I can just be myself. It’s fun! By the way, I’m also impressed with 🐧’s ability to adapt to 🕺when they’re joking around. Maybe because he can do tsukkomi and boke
🐧: Is this about my aptitude for comedy now 🤣
⚡: When I’m with 🕺, we’re both the boke, so it gets out of hand. I think 🐧’s amazing in that regard.
🐧: Thank you 🤣

RUI wants to be an artist that gives amazing performances to as many people as he can, even if it’s embarrassing [to say it now]. He wants his performances to make people feel something or impact their lives in some shape or form, and to keep doing it until he dies.

MANATO wants to be someone who learns / absorbs something more than he did yesterday. He also wants to update himself, whether in matters of stamina / power, MCs, or staging from talking with the [BE:FIRST] members. And to perform in bigger venues. Also, thinking from a global point of view. And performing in venues that have good sound systems so they can appeal to fans via their live performances.
